1) Portal changes - Technical

 

• Logo added

• Colours

• Info contributors at the top – connected to the wiki, easy to update

• Mission statement added

• Added Primo as another repository. Primo contacted by Gordon. Gordon asked do you have records we can harvest. No response about harvesting. Probably their software is not compatible.

 

Action: Judy asked Gordon if he could make the bullets on the ALPS LINK portal “more bullety” (indented).

 

Action: Gordon will check what is being posted with the blog feed. Are the title and abstract/description being captured?

 

Action: Gordon will create an RSS button for the Recent Uploads feed.

 

Action: Katherine will investigate using the wiki to populate the portal as an Announcement blog.

 

2) Portal Version 2

 

The SOL*R interface is embedded in the draft of version 2 of the ALPS LINK portal. All objects are shown regardless of license type. Anyone can download anything. You have to have a BC Campus log-in to contribute.

 

Action: Gordon will ask Scott to add Recent Uploads back in when the next version of the portal is created.

 

SOL*R is going to create a special material type – which can have a third option for license type. Creative Commons, no commercial use. This allows us customize the options. Gordon is hoping that it should be out by September.

 

3) Marketing / Promotion

 

i) We should start by marketing the existing portal and encourage librarians to get BC Campus log-in, and start contributing.

 

ii) Contest to be awarded at the ALPS December meeting.

iii) Timing of Marketing:

 

Early September – September 12, 2007

Email to ALPS List, CPSLD (short email): Notify of contest, ask librarians that as they’re getting ready for your classes to make a list of what they’re using. When they get a breather (in about 6 weeks, or so), please add to the repository.

 

Mid-Sept

Local Champions – personal contacts. In some cases, the local champion can be the one in the institution who actually loads the new learning object.

 

Mid-October (7th week).

Email to ALPS List, CPSLD: Thanks for making the list, now that you’re getting a breather from instruction, here’s how to create BC Campus log-in.

BCLA Reporter – Yodler article or longer.

 

November – Email to ALPS List, CPSLD reminder. 2 weeks left, upload objects, fabulous prizes, send us your stories – have used, plan to use, wish you’d known about in September

 

January ’08 Email to ALPS List, CPSLD Next term, send out a slightly different message: Now that you’re back… Stories of how the learning objects have been used. “When you’re loading, take look” Prize for best anecdote of use.

 

Article – CARL. ACRL news. How we did it good.

 

April ’08 BCLA Conference presentation.

 

Action: Katherine will speak with Sylvia about ALPS sponsoring award. DONE. Suggested instead of award we call this idea the ALPS LINK contest.

 

Action: Liza will speak with Langara bookstore about donating for the prizes.

 

Action: Gordon will speak Anita about ELN about sponsoring.

 

Action: Katherine will update ALPS Executive. DONE.

 

Action: Patti will see if Douglas College can donate prizes.

 

Action: Judy has downloaded Gordon’s learning object, “How to Modify a Search”. Judy will use it for an example of how something has been used and modified by adding Langara’s logo.

 

Action: Judy will send the document to Gordon as a word document. Gordon will add a template of how a document looks in the repository, and how you cite it in your new document. Adapted by.. Also add suggested wording for the footer.

 

Action: Gordon to post a list of post-secondary institutions in BC. DONE Our group can then identify if we know someone at that institution to contact. First contact the Reference and Instruction person.

 

Action: Katherine to speak with Tara to find out what the deadlines are for the BCLA Reporter to use for our own marketing plan. DONE. Deadlines for BCLA Reporter are approximately the 20th of each month prior to the issue. For November-December issue, deadline = October 20th; January-February issue = December 20th; March issue = February 20th; April issue = March 20th; May issue = April 20th.

 

Action: Gordon to write a first draft of the article and email announcements. Then it can be collectively edited on the wiki. DONE

 

Liaison with other repositories.

 

Public Knowledge Project has built an open access harvester. You need your own server. It’s something we might want to do for the future; it’s not an immediate goal.

 

Judy noted that the keyword searching includes the full-text of the documents. i.e. she searched for the word “citation” and it brought up a biology learning object. It would be helpful to be able to specify which fields we’re searching.

 

Patti suggested we could have the advance search as the default search.

 

Action: Gordon will check the advance search to see if we can specify searching the metadata.

 

Action: Gordon to bring to Scott’s attention our actions. DONE

 

Deadlines: 1st message goes out in early September. All to review/edit by July 20, 2007
