Minutes from the ALPS LINK Meeting
October 10, 2008 9:00 AM-11:00 AM
Langara College, Room L216
Present: Heather Morrison, BC ELN; Katherine Miller, UBC; Liza Hutchison, Langara College; Sarah Perrin, SLAIS-UBC
Regrets: Gordon Coleman, BC ELN; Patti Romanko, Douglas College
Fall Campaign: LAUD A LIBRARIAN
Discussion:
- 2 entries so far.
- One local champion asked whether a nominator is necessary for the Laud a Librarian contest. The group decided that it's fine to nominate your own work - no nominator is necessary.
We received a question about what is the preferred format(s) to upload a tutorials such as one created using Captivate? Should the creator include source files and html? This prompted further discussion about linking records with different format files and also with different versions. Sarah suggested that if we can't join them, we could include information in the title i.e. version two. Everyone agreed it is important to be able to cross-reference all of the versions and formats for a particular learning object.
Action: Heather has confirmed that multiple items, in different formats, can be attached to one item in SOL*R. Gordon will inquire about the captivate format (not listed as one specifically supported by SOL*R). This info can become part of a FAQ for librarians depositing items. The ideal is to include the shareable format, the only question is which formats can be supported by SOL*R.
Question to Gordon: What is the status of our dream of cross-searching repositories?
Action: Katherine to bring back to the ALPS executive request that ALPS offer sessions on what types of software are available to create tutorials and maybe do session(s) in virtual space so people outside of the lower mainland can attend. Could also be followed by a series of workshops on the tutorial creating software. There may be a tie-in with the December ALPS meeting instruction theme.
Marketing. Next Steps:
Marketing Contest. Send email Nov 4th to ALPS list People have been asking questions like... about the Laud a Librarian contest
Action: All contact local champions in October. This is critical for marketing the contest and was the particularly successful component of the contest last December. Local champions might take responsibility for identifying good work, or delegating this responsibility to someone.
Action: Sarah to send email to SLAIS list. (DONE)
Next Meeting:
Week of November 17th ALPS LINK group to meet. All welcome to come!
Action: Liza to coordinate through Meeting Wizard.
Future actions:
Action: Heather to talk with Bill Badke re: ANTS - where they're at, where we're at. Increase communication with ANTS, explore possibilities for working together cooperatively, possibly invite to ALPS Dec meeting. Request link on ANTS repository to ALPS LINK.
BC ELN to profile a rotating link to new tutorials on the BC ELN website in 2009, when new website is available. [Gordon, is this correct?}
