Updates

The ALPS LINK committee is going through another transition time as we say goodbye to a few of our long-term members. We would like to gratefully acknowledge the contributions of Celia Brinkerhoff and Katherine Parker, who because of new work commitments are not able to continue at this time on ALPS LINK. Thank you Celia and Katherine for everything you have done to foster the growth of ALPS LINK! Also, one of our founding members and our technical go-to-guy, Gordon Coleman is on sabbatical during this year, so our committee has had a considerable down-sizing.

Fall Campaign: Object of the Month

Discussion included:

  • how do we "refresh" the Laud a Librarian Contest
  • monthly announcement campaign
  • What do we need for learning objects? (Similar to our Burning Needs Contest 2010)
  • collaborative design of learning object with others at other institutions

Instead of the yearly Laud a Librarian contest, we will renew our efforts to publish an article in the BCLA Browser profiling a learning object in ALPS LINK and their creators. We would like to re-engage the ALPS LINK Champions by soliciting their ideas to find people who are doing interesting things with learning objects. Laud a Librarian brought the great things to the surface once a year, let's try to keep that momentum going through out the year.

The committee decided we will focus this year on the successful Object of the Month campaign to highlight examples of some of the best work in the repository and to encourage donations and use of the learning objects through this path. We hope to survey our users about the Laud a Librarian contest and their use of ALPS LINK in general next summer (2012). If there are opportunities for profiling folks who are using the learning objects it would be good to hear about that too in the Object of the Month campaign.

ACTION: Vera Spika will take the lead on the Object of the Month campaign, starting by finding a learning object and librarian creator(s) to profile for the October 10th deadline.

ACTION: Group to consider ways we can involve more SLAIS students in our committee.

Survey and Metrics

Once Gordon is back, we would like to survey users to see how they are using ALPS LINK, what they’d like to have included. More search functionality in the portal? What would make ALPS LINK more useful to them? Also we can use some of the portal's data to let folks know what is being used.
